No-Slip Question

I was talking to a respected mechanic of my area (leonard of Leonard's Off-Road for those of you in Oregon who may know him) and he said not to put a No-Slip into my L/S carrier. he said it will grenade after a while due to the cross pin. from this site i have heard noting but good things about the No-Slip. He recommended a Detriot which i know are good also, but i just got my 4.88's in yesterday and dont really want to set them up again when i lock the rear. any comments? is this only a problem for strictly trail rigs that see a lot of time in extreme conditions or what's the deal?
 
The LS carrier is probably weaker because of the extra space "carved" out for the clutches, I don't see why the crosspin would be weaker unless it's notched, which is for deep gears (4.56 and deeper for the 8.8), you can get away with a full crosspin if you slightly grind the edge of the ring gear, which doesn't hurt anything. You cant even get a lunchbox locker together with a notched pin, the pin must be out of the carrier.
 
well, i just got 4.88's so the notched crosspin may be what he is referring to. how "real" is the threat of it grenading on me over time?
 
you don't need to "set up" the rear end again for a detroit.its a lot easier to set bachlash again than to set up a new gear set.
 
Backlash is half the setup. But you're right; it's by FAR the easier half.

Basically, the reason pinion depth is irrelevant is because the relevant surfaces on the carrier are all turned on a lathe with the same centerline.
 
So what are the chances of the No-Slip grenading on me down the road?
 
Very little. I'm 99% sure you will need a full crosspin to make the no-slip work however.
 
so if i were to change out crosspins does that require resetting up of the gears?
 
im pretty sure you need to get an open carrier to put in a lunchbox locker. They dont fit in a L/S Carrier
 
No, the crosspin comes out of the carrier (it's what the spider gears are on), well the notched ones don't because the gear (deep gears) covers the hole by a tiny bit, they install the notched pin before the ring gear is installed and the notch is made so that the pin can slip mostly out of the carrier before hitting the gear to allow the axles to be slid in and the c clips to be installed on the end of the axle shafts. I tried using a notched pin with my lock-right, there simply wasn't enough room to install the locker with the pin in. So what I did (and what many others do, such as 4x4Junkie) is take a dremel and ever so slightly grind the edge of the ring gear to allow enough clearence for the pin to come out. This doesn't affect gear strength at all because it's out of the contact area, because it's on the edge.

EDIT: Chico, they make No-Slips for 8.8 LS carriers ;)
 
I had my gears set up because i was not up to doing it myself. is there a way to get the no-slip in there without needing to mess with the gears? i didn't get the locker yet because of money, but i was under the impression lunchbox lockers required no gear set up and can just go in the carrier with little know how. I hope i wasn't mistaken.
 
Yes, it will go in without having to pull your gears out/setting up the gears. The problem I forsee is that you will have to lightly grind the edge of the ring gear to get the crosspin to come out and once you've got it out, you might as well install an un-notched cross pin when you put it back together...
 
ok so i wont get rid of that when i sell my gears so that i can use it when i get a locker. thanks for clearing this up.
