My wonderful 200k 5 spd manual transmission in my 88 Ranger STX has let me down. It has a hard time backing up my driveway. Is this the trans going out? I was just getting ready to change the clutch, but I can not figure out why the clutch would cause this, so I am thinking that the trans also needs to be replaced. All froward geara work great and the clutch does not slip at all. I only have a problem in reverse. The truck does not want to move. Almost feels like the clutch is slipping or teh engine is stumbling, but only in reverse. Any ideas??

OK...Maybe I was wrong. The first time that I backup into my driveway, it works fine. The next time, I have to slip the clutch more. If I keep doing it, the truck will shudder and I definitely smell burning clutch. Is this normal for a clutch to be able to run all forward gears without slipping, but have trouble in reverse?? Thanks for the advice.
