We bought the truck from a salvage auction (for my soon to be 16 yr old son) with passenger front fender bender. So I dont know any history on the tranny. We got the front end fixed and started to back it out of the shop and it seemed to be backing out good, then it made a clunk noise and started to slip. All forward gears work great. By the end of the 2 mi test drive the reverse wouldnt work at all. No noise or anything abnormal besides no reverse.

Any suggestions on things to check that could make reverse not work when all forward gears seem to be great? This truck was not driven for approx 8-10 months. It has a 3.0 v6 with overdrive.

Would it be worth it to change fluid and filter?

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

my 3.0 lost reverse to but it was toast..... that being said i im going to go out on a limb and say you burnt out a clutch that controls reverse (i don't remember which clutches control reverse) and the valve body needs the transgo shift kit installed.

I'll put money on the low/reverse band broke. Actually a pretty common problem. Sadly it's not an easy fix. You will have to pull the transmission for a rebuild. Its pretty much the last part out and the first going back in.

I had the same prob on my 99. pull it and rebiuld it. put in a shift kit. thats pritty much your options. you could just fix the reverse but you might as well just rebiuld it all since it will already be out.

I have the same problem, what did you determine was the problem and how did you solve it ?

My 98 ranger extended cab four wheel drive with the 3.0 the reverse went out to. Is this common?
