I did a search and didn't see this problem if anyone can point me to it that would be great if there is one. drove truck to work and back and no problems went out next morning and nothing no lights even, was able to turn engine over by jumping solenoid but wouldn't start. came home that night started right up. went out a little later again nothing. it has a new solenoid, starter.. new ignition module the one on the column... took a meter to the fusible links and they also are fine... what am I missing... :icon_confused:

it is an 87 4wd 5spd 2.9

is the clutch in when you start it....

LOL sorry had to, your kinda new.

Sounds to me like a moisture issue. whats the weather and temps outside like when it does and doesnt start? id get a volt meter out and start at the battery. see where you lose the power.

it's someplace after the fusible links and before the cab!

ok so for the hell of it I removed the battery and placed charger on just the cables and there was a clicking sound over by the washer reservoir... and now have lights... and ignition... so what is the clicking sound coming from?

totally baffled at this point...

Use simple trouble shooting.
Check fuses.
Clean terminals and grounds.
Tighten connections.
Ensure charged battery.
Try to start.

Start-yes = :yahoo:

No = :icon_confused:

Start checking other connections/components related to the symptom, i.e. no crank.

Go from there.

it's running

I'm going to jinx myself now :-) anyways no clue as to why but it started up when I went out, but it did... so now have a new ignition switch, new key and cylinder which looking back isn't a bad thing!

I'm thinking there was a relay that got stuck and would not provide the power to the cab! the problem is what relay? I know there was some clicking by the washer reservoir... so I don't know...

anyways thanks for any suggestions no matter how foolish they may sound!

have a good one!

well again no power

I had a flashing battery light and since I had the lifetime warranty brought it in and replaced it, even though it passed he said the bearings were noisy and the machine wouldn't test the regulator correctly all the time so got a new one, (who was I to argue) well it still is on, called the 800 number that came with alt and we determined with a meter I had a bad wire and traced it down to the connector by the master cylinder. in cutting the wire I hit ground and it sparked. well now there is no power again to the cab... :( I even replaced the main relay which seemed to be my problem last time but it was on the passenger side.

is there a main fuse someplace I may have shorted out. again this is an 87

thanks

Old connections...check the wires just inside the engine compartment and find a connector there that has about ten wires. Aside from that there is a thicker black cable with a pink stripe on it...that is your main power feed and it connects through a single connector and runs over to the battery...take the connection apart and check it for corrosion...if no corrosion check the wire either side of the connector to see how well they fit the connector...if not well, put in a new connector...

Do you have any lights come on when you turn the key at times? If so but no start, check the ten wire connector as there is also a power feed in there...that connector has a habit of getting loose and when it does your lights, horn, and other items it feeds will not work...side lights et al...

wait for a really nice day, open the hood, douce EVERYTHING in water from a hose, then go in there with the volt meter...

the clicking was probably your solenoid, they don't like lowe amperage, and a charger doesn't have enough power to turn the engine over by it's self
