I just bought a 87 Ford Ranger V6 with the A4LD transmission. Already had to replace the seal behind the torque converter because it blew out. Well the over drive dose not work. The previous owner said it never worked properly worked for him either. What can cause this? Is it the torque converter no locking up properly? I have a 93 ZJ that had a problem with the torque converter no working properly because of the brake pedal switch. IS there some sensor or switch that might be bad or is it mechanical and I either need to get a new tranny or get it rebuilt?

I have a 87 with auto also and when we rebuilt it I think there is a solenoid that makes it shift into overdrive. it is screwed into the valve body on the side of the tranny. take it out and put 12 volts on it to see whether it actuates. If it doesn't replace it, might solve your problem.

I dont know about the 80's model ranger, I have a 99 3.0 with electric shift and trans case, my OD quit working, "and so did my backup lights", I checked my fuses and found the one for my backup lights burned out, replaced it and lo and behold, my OD started working,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks I will start with testing the solenoid and go from there. I do know when I took the tranny out, the fluid was dirty but there was no metal shavings. Hopefully it is the solenoid or some other simple fix.

you have to make sure that the engine is not have a miss fire, a miss fire will make the converter not turn on. there are several things that can make the transmission not apply the torqueconverter there is the transmission range sensor adjustment, the converter solenoid, the modulator valve, and the valvebody warped or damaged causing the valves inside to get stuck and cause fluid flow to deture and not apply the converter. remember that when you are in drive at a dead stop its actually 1st gear, till you feel the next shift ist 2nd and so on.

Engine is definitely not misfiring. I went a pulled a 5speed trans from a bronco II yesterday. Same year and engine.
