Over at the CSU engine lab in Fort Collins Colorado, (The Lab is where Colorado comes up with all of their great ideas to improve emissions that they can regulate.) They have been testing laser ignition systems for a couple of years now on big industrial Natural Gas engines. They have a problem with them melting down and being destroyed by pre-ignition/detonation. Talking with a few of the guys there that are working on their masters, we won't be seeing them anytime soon....

But that is not stopping some of the industry sponsors from trying. (Cooper and Altronic) Imagine the $$$ the first one that brings out a successful prototype will make. Spark plugs are the #1 reason we shut down pipeline engines for maintenance. We already know how to change oil on the fly, laser spark could give us some hellacious run time!

As someone who is about to get his mechanical engineering degree I like the idea of the lazer ignition. I think the engine controller would have to be pretty ridiculous, but you could get ride of the O2 sensor. You might even be able to get more power out of the equivalent size spark ignition engine.
