Long story short girlfriend was driving my truck and she came to a stop. When she gave it gas to go it didnt. I got it to drive on 2nd for a few miles then lost that at a stop loght. Now there is nothing, no first, 2nd, drive or reverse. I can see the driveshaft spinning like it wants to go but it just doesn't have the power to turn the tires. Rear end isn't seized. Not sure what happened, always kept up with fluid changes and filters. Truck is 98 4x4 4.0 5r55e with bw1354e tcase.

Assuming automatic trans from reference to "Drive"

Automatic trans doesn't have "gears", so no direct connection exists between engine and drive shaft, like in a manual trans, they run on pressure, you have lost the pressure via blown seals or gaskets, or the pump that provides the pressure is bad.

Could be torque converter but have to pull the transmission in any case.

There is a possibility that the transfer case is in Neutral, but extreme long shot there

Automatic transmissions are assembled using magic smoke and snake oil and require a sacrificial goat to ensure proper operation...

Which is why I avoid them like a Muslim avoids Bacon!

It does not take black magic to understand why a manual transmission doesn't work correctly, it requires a relatively short logic tree to diagnose any problem...

MMMM. Muslim bacon.

Now when you say the drive shaft is spinning is it actually going full multiple rotations or is it just giving a bit and then returning to where it was?

If it can spin freely you lost the rear.
