On my 86 XLT the dimmer switch is integrated with the turn signal lever. You pull forward to change from bright to dim and visa versa. It isn't hard to change as I have replaced it once because the turn signals quit. The hardest part was getting the damn shroud off the steering column.

Well there are two wires for power at the headlights and one for ground. I would suspect you have an issue on the wire that supplies power for the low beams.

Thank you for the valuable information.

Wiring diagrams, click here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/EDiagrams/index.htm

1983 to 1989 head light wiring here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/EDiagrams/files/Diagram_Headlights_1983to1989.JPG

You can see High and Low beams share a common Ground wire so if high beams work then low beam will also have good ground.

And from diagram high beam and low beam share common 12volt wire coming from the Main light switch going to the Multi-function switch(turn signal stalk), the Red/yellow stripe wire(R/Y), so it must be OK or high beams wouldn't work either

So as adsm08 said look at the 12volt wire coming from the multi-function switch.

Red/black stripe wire(R/BK)
