My credo
Shoot first ask questions never
I tilted back the bed and replaced the fuel filler, put everything back together and she wouldn't crank or start. Headlights and wipers still worked.

So I just replaced 10 year old battery today, soon as I connected it there was a little puff of smoke from the vicinity of the battery tray, now if the keys are turned to on the wipers run non stop and are unaffected by the wiper controls. Still no crank no start.

I also had the classic issue of the keys-in-the-ignition noise maker going off any time the door was open and it was conspicuously silent after replacing the battery.

The one thing I am inexperienced in dealing with is electrical problems. Of course.

I don't know what the hell is going on here. Anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like when you tilted the bed back, you created a short somewhere or possibly tore a ground loose. There is a wire harness at the rear of the bed for the tail lights and license plate lights. You might start by looking in that area for any obvious loose wires that may have torn out of a connector. You should be able to see them all from underneath the truck easy enough.

That's all I got at this point.

The underhood fuse relay center is right there near the battery... I would be looking to see if you popped a maxi fuse. Is there any add on wiring connected to the battery?

I would start at where the initial work was done and look at all wiring that goes from cab to bed. +2 on Bird76Mojo reply.

I too need to replace or fix filler neck as I have the symtomatic filling problem at the gas station where I have to gently and SLOWLY fill the tank or gas spills out.

I have the same symptoms on my 87 V8 swap truck. If I don't fill it carefully when it's nearly full, it will spill over. Stock tank and filler neck, so it baffles me why it does this... The pump should sense it being full and shut off but for whatever reason it doesn't.

I would investigate what caused the puff of smoke at the battery tray and check all your connections at the bed. how far back did you tilt the bed? Got a voltmeter?? That would help you out a lot when it comes to basic 12v on a truck. If you don't have one I would get one. Harbor freight gives them away. Not the greatest but they tell you if you have voltage or not.
