No clearance between tensioner and main pulley?

I've been meaning to ask about this for a while. On my '94 2.3, it is nearly impossible to replace the serpentine belt without removing the tensioner completely. The issue isn't belt tension, but the gap between the base of the tensioner (not the pulley itself) and the main pulley. You can't slide the belt in and out between the two. The only solution I've found so far is unbolting the tensioner, sliding the new belt in, then mounting the tensioner back up. Has anybody else run into this?
