new to here, so hear goes. just bought a 94 2.3l ranger the other day, knowing it was going to have some problems to deal with. when i take off the engine sputters for a bit then gets going. it is a stick and i have driven a stick in a while but i can tell its not me. any suggestions? its at 93,000 miles and i plan on doing the plugs and wires. Also no p/s guy before ripped it out, does the p/s have its own bracket or does it connect to the ac bracket?

Is the check engine light on? Well your problem is... its a 4 cyl! haha i have one to and i have had this problem before. In my case the EGR gasket had somehow slipped down and blocked the flow by more than half. Truck sounded cool but it ran like shit. Doubt its that though.

I mean theres a list of things it could be:
Plugs
wires
fuel filter could be clogged up
timing could be off
head gasket

Yeah any codes?
It could be due for a basic tuneup...

You oughtta read the plugs, see if it is running rich or lean.
Get the engine to sputter, don't get going enough to get it to run well, just sputter. Then shut off the motor and come to a stop. Pull the plugs and check em. Basically, White is lean, Black is rich, brown/tan is good. May want to google 'reading sparkplugs'

thanks for the info. also is there a way to pull your own codes? or do you know if any shops will pull them for free?

Heck, you can do it with just a piece of wire and no test light. I keep a bent paper clip in the pocket of the door just for that reason.
