I have a 99 ranger xlt. When I turn the knob on the dash the light turns on and i can hear the click but the 4x4 isnt engaging. Is there a problem with the hubs not engaging? I have a growling noise that is coming from the drivers front wheel that i think is the bearing. What should i look at next. Thanks.

HERE, HERE, or HERE.

OK. So you are saying that it is the hub then? That's what i was thinking to but i wanted to get some more input. What would be the best option then the manual conversion or a new factory hub?

I had auto lockers on mine & the driver side went bad. I went to replace them & WOW $479.00 a set for new ones that were only gauranteed a year. I went with Warn Manual lockers $179.99 at advance auto. guaranteed for life. Yeah you have to get out to lock them in. my hubs are mechanical lockers that even ford said they fought with. In 98 or 97 they went to vacum acuated hubs. You have a vacum line running down to your hubs. You might just have a vacum problem, ie-bad hose etc.

He clearly states he has a 99 model truck. There are no "warns" available. The only option he has is the AVM hubs, which are shown in the link above, or to permantly lock them, also shown above.

In 2001, they stopped using hubs all together... If it were me, I would save the $$ and just lock them permantly.

I am replacing the hub today. What is your opinion of the home brew method of locking the hub permanently like in the third link?

I had a 1999 Ranger. Believe it or not, the PVH hubs worked fine on it the whole time I owned it, and still do to this day.

If it were my truck, I would just do the 'homebrew' method and lock them that way. I also had a 2001 which is setup with no hubs (just like yours will be if you do that method) and I never had any issues with it.

Only problem is, it is much cheaper to just lock them permanently then to replace any of the parts you explained in your write up.

If you want it original, fine, but $500 for hubs is insane.

It only cost me 3 bucks for new lines... if theres another problem I totally agree it would be cheaper to just put on manual hubs. If I had to replace the O-ring I was just going to get the AVM's

but it never hurts to check what the problem is.

Plus you lose like 1 - 2 mpg with them constantly locked in. over time that would be more expensive.

Yeah & I was trying to help the man too. Maybe you have a bad vaucum line?!?!:thefinger:

Thanks for the help guys. I replaces the hub but still no 4x4. Now when i turn the knob to high the light illuminates and i hear the click but nothing and all indicator for 4 low is not illuminating now. Control box maybe or?

Ouch... Expensive replacement for nothing.
