Okay, I just recently rebuilt the entire front end of my truck and replace the crappy auto hubs with manual warn ones. That all works great and as supposed to. Turn the hubs to lock and turn the indicator on the dash to 4x4 high and the light kicks on and I hear a little click and the front end engages and 4x4 takes off just like it's supposed to. By the way truck is 97 with 4.0L and 5 speed manual tranny with electric shift t-case. The problem is when I come to a complete stop...shift to neutral...push in brake pedal...turn knob to 4x4 low....nothing happens...dash light stays on 4wd and no clicking sound or anything and truck doesn't shift into low range. I wouldn't suspect fuses or shift motor since 4x4 high works perfectly fine and I believe I am doing the procedure correctly with truck in neutral and foot on brake....still nothing? Any ideas?

Thanks,
BigDan

I recently had the same problem on a '91 4.0 5 speed. My problem was the speed sensor that is hooked to the shift motor. I cut it off and spliced another one from a old shift motor I had.

Cool, sounds easy enough...but can I buy just the speed sensor separate from buying the entire motor?

Thanks,
BigDan

Yes, the speed sensors are separate and do not come with the shift motor. By the way you didn't mention if you are pushing the clutch in. It won't go to 4 low unless the clutch is pushed as well as the brake pedal.

Well I noticed that the shift motor for your 91 is different than for my 97...your 91 shows a sensor on the tail end of the motor, and it isn't there on my 97 which has a different part number. Yeah I have tried it both ways...with the brake pedal only in neutral and also with both pedals shoved in in neutral...still nothing. No low range dash light or clicking from the relay for low range and definately no engagement. It just stays in 4wd high.

this sounds really stupid, but check to make sure your brake lights are working when you push on the brakes, if the brake switch on the pedal goes bad it wont turn the brake lights on, send signal to the shift motor that your brakes are on ect.

I am pretty sure my brake lights come on, but very good point..I will check that out when I get home from work. I don't have cruise control so that would be the only way to tell is the brake lights...but yeah will definately look into that as well.

Thanks,
BigDan

So any other ideas? Are there two different relays for 4x4 high and 4x4 low? Cause I can hear the one click when it shifts into 4x4 high, but don't see or hear anything when switching to 4x4 low? Could it be the switch in the dash?
