i 99 4.0 4wd with the turn knob on the dash....when i turn the knob to 4high, the light lights up on the dash and when i try and spin the tires it seems i dont have the fronts powered. and it wont even light up the 4 low. I am new to this forum, you guys helped me get the thing running yesterday, now i need help with the 4wd. please try and steer me in a trouble shooting direction

it might be your hubs. can you hear the tcase shift motor clicking when you turn it? turn the truck off and leave your door open and turn the knock and listen for the motor or take the tcase motor off and turn the tcase into 4h by hand. then drive it if it still doesnt drive like its in 4wd then its your hubs

To shift into 4LO the truck needs to be stopped, foot on brake, and transmission in neutral. Should pop into low then.

You can replace the hubs as suggested, or check the tech library to find out how to lock them permantly and forget about them.

Yeah like he said its gotta be stopped, braked and neutral. I had the same problem figuring it out (big difference from my 84, manual everything!:headbang:)

Try engaging 4x4 hi at a slow speed like 5 mph, it should clunk or do something if it went into place. then spin dem tires (or try)

The newer systems don't make a whole lotta noise upon engagement.

Especially at low speeds.
