OK, so I'm gonna pull the VB on the tranny (5R44E), got the ATSG manual today and it recommends the use of two guide pins for lining up the new separator plate and gaskets.
I'm pricing the guide pins...and found them at http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Automatic_transmission_tools_s/1.htm...one pin for $87 and the other pin at $87.
Are you kidding me? The parts for the entire repair job won't cost that much, including Mercon V.
Why should a guide pin cost more than a few bucks, tops? Where can I get them at something like a reasonable price?

Make them. Cut the heads off the appropriate bolts.

Easy enough. Should I pick up a few bolts from the Ford dealer when I get the parts for the VB, or can I find something with the correct pitch and diameter at Lowe's?

Dealer won't have any VB bolts. Source them out however you like.
