I am looking at purchasing a D-SLR within a few days and was just wondering which camera would be best to purchase. I will just be using it for casual shots. It will most likely be vehicles, landscapes and maybe some shots people.

Are you saying you would recommend someone buy a DSLR for casual snapshots? Are you looking to build an audience for lenses you maybe got bored with and are looking to sell?Definately don't waste your money on a P&S camera.

That's cool with me. Like I said, I have a D40 to take on bike trips. The D200 is too big in the bags. If I brought that I would have to leave my undies at home. Plus, I can use the same lenses. There isn't that big of price difference between the D40 and a good P&S.
And with the D40 (or any DSLR) you can always expand capabilities with lenses in the future, if you do get interested in photography. This isn't
possible with the P&S. If you don't develop an interest, the Nikon's hold their value, and you can sell it.
I'm not interested in selling any of my lenses!![]()

I don't doubt the benefits of an SLR. My wife has been in to photography for years. I have spent more on camera stuff than I have on motorcycles!! LOL I just didn't think he was looking for anything more than a snapshot camera in which case the SLR's benefits would not be realized. Actually, for many people that are new to camera's the settings on an SLR alone are confusing.
If you re-read the OP, the question was which to buy, a D40 or D60... And you can operate either of these cameras in "AUTO MODE" like a P&S until you learn the basics of a DSLR.
Canon has been on top for a while until Nikon stole plays from Canon's playbook with the CMOS sensors and FF.
I like the Nikon, but they pissed me off long ago with there professional service.
