Nikon has an Image Optimization function called D-Lighting. My D300 has it, and it is also in Capture NX, and Capture NX 2. I just upgraded to
Capture NX 2, and it is a great software!! Here is a photo original, without D-Lighting, and the new photo, using D-Lighting. I took the photo in RAW format, and saved it in Capture
NX 2 to JPG, with and without D-Lighting. This function is intended for optimizing photos taken in high constrast conditions, like bright sunlight:
