i plan on putting a d35ttb und my 89 ranger, with an 8.8 rear end. if i have axle problems i would like to know about chromolly axles for strenght. what do people think

No body makes a full set of chromo shafts for the d35.

You can get chromo outer stubs, but that is it.

Do the mods outlined in the FAQ at the top here (Jeep hubs, Spicer 5-760 u-joints w/clips or welded, etc.). All are real simple and don't cost a whole lot.

Unless you like to do dumb things with the gas pedal, that should be enough to keep you going locked with 35" tires, even 37s in some cases. More than that, IMO you'll be money ahead to swap straight on over to F-350 axles (D60 & 10.25") instead of messing around with alloy shafts and stuff for a smaller axle.
