Just bought a 93 ranger. Not sure if it is going into overdrive or not. At 60mph i am reving at 2500 rpm with 235's for tire. It seems to shift 1-2-d-od but if I pull it from OD back into D the rpms do not rise. The last shift only drops the rpm about 300rpm (could this be torque lock-up) or how much should torque lock up drop the rpm and how much should over drive drop the rpm.Is there a special way to verify tc lock up and od. Also it doesn't like to shift in D on a cold morning but if I put it manually into 2 then it shifts and after that it is fine. It seems like my shifting is out of whack. I have never owned an auto before and now I am starting to know why.

Your overdrive is geared at 0.75, 3rd gear is 1.0... So you should have about 25% drop in RPM... So if you are pushing 3000 rpm, that should be 750 rpm drop.

I have noticed my truck shifts into overdrive once and a while, even when it is set in D, but it always downshifted from OD to D when I did.

What engine do you have? the 2.9 and 4.0 have different torque converters.

Sounds like it's not going into OD... At 60 you should be about 1900rpm in OD... The 300 rpm drop sounds like TC lock up...

Look for damaged wires, the TC lockup is controlled by electric. I had a BII that shifted really hard and didn't seem to lock up the TC. When I got to poking around I discovered that the wiring bundle that goes down to the transmission from the engine harness had somehow come loose and the exhaust rubbed/burned through most of the bundle. Repaired the harness (with soldier, heat-shrink tube and new wire) and the truck drove like new again. That's where I'd start. It didn't look all that obvious, I missed it the first time I looked at things actually, might be further ahead to unplug it and fish it up into the engine compartment for inspection to see if it is damaged.

Other than that, it could be the solenoid that controls TC lockup, or the TC itself.

Oh, and check the fuses in the engine compartment, IIRC there is one for electronic shift.

it's a 4.0, ok thanks i'll look at the wireing. Has anyone ever wired in a manual switch for OD like they do for the TC lockup?

so I took it to a good reputable trans shop, they pulled the pan and said there is so much metal in the pan they wouldn't recommended going any further. They said the OD is def electrical,. The good news is they didn't charge me anything to look into the elec and pull the pan. so I guess i'm off to pull a used trans. Will an explorer trans work?

sploders came with the a4ld at some point i believe but couldnt tell you the years, i would stick with pulling one from a ranger

One from a Ranger and one from an Explorer are identical... I'd swap in an M50D-R1 though... That way this same thing won't happen again...

Got it figured, i decided to try the easiest things first. I adjusted both bands and now it works :icon_cheers:
