Hello everyone,

New member here and also new to Ford Rangers. Just picked up a 1991 Ranger XLT Supercab, 3.0, 5 speed, 67K, with no rust. Looking to use this as a daily driver. It has sat unused for 2 years and needs minor repair and servicing.

Sounds like a good find...they are nice trucks and the low mileage should take you far...I bought a 1992 with the 3.0 that had almost 400,000 km on the clock. It ran like a top and did not use any oil...so if you take care of it with regular oil changes it should be good for many years.

Only thing I would suggest is to get the frame and body oiled ASAP and make it a regular habit...it will pay for itself over the years with less work needed to keep it on the road.

This truck had only traveled 5K miles in the last 10 years. Previous owner parked it due to failing inspection. It needs brake lines and new tires, battery, hoses, etc. I will also change all fluids and get the windshield resealed to stop a water leak in the cab. I haven't fired it up yet or pulled it off the trailer.

Do you have any recommendations on a rust preventive oil for the underside? I did start to look online yesterday briefly however the ones found were not available in the US.

This small truck will take some getting used to. My other truck is a Military 2-1/2 ton Deuce. This Ranger would fit in the bed of the Deuce!

I agree. The earlier square body style is also my favorite. This one was a deal that I couldn't pass up.

Don't use oil, use tractor paint. Oil will drip on the road and get into the water. Tractor paint might still need touched up every few years, but it's safer for the water supply.

Isn't that type of rustproofing a wax base? In other words, very thick and not drippy. Similar to cosmoline that the military uses to preserve metal parts.

You can get non drip oil treatment like I had done on my Zuki, but it may not be available these days...

Painting is actually better but it does take some prep if the frame is greasy or has shale...knocking it off with a hammer and chisel works well, but it is a lot of work. I did mine with a grinder an wire wheel (there is a heavy duty one for angle grinders) and then hammered off the scale with a good chisel.

Once that's done you can spray it with rust converter and then paint right over that...if you look at what one user did (CVAR) he documented his very well and names products that are available in the US...so search on his work and I'm sure you will be inspired...

The boxes come off these trucks very easily so you can work from the top down instead of underneath...unless you have a hoist which helps too...
