Hi,

I’m new to this forum and have a couple of questions. I bought a used 1985 Ranger XL V6 2.8L manual and was wondering which product you guys recommend for the manual transmission and rear differential. I went to the Ford dealership and they recommended adding some additive friction modifier to the rear differential when changing the fluid but was vague when asked about the fluids. The manual calls for 80W standard manual lubricant but a mechanic said to check the fluid to see if its brown or red because that will determine which lubricant to use. I’ve owned a 1995 ranger in the past and the tranny blew on it so I’m trying to do some preventive maintenance to avoid that scenario for as long as possible. Anyways, I wanted to thank everyone in advance for all your help. I’ll post some pics soon. Thanks

IC

A 1985 Ranger I believe has the Toyo-Koygo transmission, which uses standard gear oil lubricant.
80W is what the manual calls for, though many have used 75W-90 or 80W-90 without issue.

The transfer case (if 4WD) is the only component on that truck that uses "red" lubricant (more properly: Mercon ATF, as some specialty gear oils can be red also)

Here’s a pic of the truck…Still need to service the rear differential, clutch fluid flush, possible water pump leak, crankshaft oil seal replacement and just pure old TLC. Anyways, it failed smog because the EGR Valve is not opening… Any tips/suggestions on troubleshooting the problem…thx
