Hi there from rangerandy (ranger randy, that is).

I just purchased my first truck, a 2001 Ranger 4x4. I love it, but have a few questions right off. How can tell if it's an "Edge", XLT, or whatever? Also, I want to improve upon the air filter to get better mileage. Any "affordable" suggestions? What can I expect for mileage from the 4.0 automatic?

Thanks everyone!

it says on the side of the truck what it is. if not under the emblem, then on the back of the bed. My 97 4x4 gets about 20 mpg so you can expect somewhere around there, maybe a little higher.

your stock intake system is already a cold air intake and includes a preheater setup to help get the engine up to temp. faster. it will flow much more air than your stock motor could ever draw. theres no way to improve upon it, despite what the K&N website might say. save your money.
