I just got this pc from a friend, with a missing hard drive. Bought a new seagate hard drive for 30$ (used as well). Went to a friends house and installed windows 7 on it. The computer turns on with a "HP" blue screen, then goes to a black screen that says :
"NTLDR is missing
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart"

anyone know what is up here?

Did you boot from the CD press F2 while booting system and see if the bios recognizes your hard drive and CD/rom or dvd under boot priority set it to cd first put your operating system in the cd and turn it off then back on it should format the HDD for a new install. then reinstall windows just follow the instructions it sounds like the hard drive is not partitioned correct.

You probably don't have your secondary boot device listed. Normally the first boot device is the CD ROM and the second is the hard drive.

If that's the case, you'll have to edit those settings in the BIOS.

Also, make sure you check everything on the list in the link that BlackBII gave you.

Good luck.

If you want a clean install the windows setup will ask you what partition to use go ahead and delete the existing partitions then reboot and start fresh.

The hard drive was fresh, freshly formatted. I just installed windows 7 ultimate on it, but it gives me that error. I will trouble shoot it tomorrow.

In the bios is it set to boot priority HDD first we cant help if you don`t give us more info.

Just Google that error message, Bro. I had some issues before and checked the Internet and found the issues and it was an easy fix. I contacted Microsoft once when I added Windows 7 late last year to our home computer and they helped me out with an issue. I was able to install Windows 7 on my laptop and my wife's laptop since we had the license from Microsoft and the license say we can use it on 3 different computers. They even made sure I had everything installed on all 3 of the computers before they hung up with me. I thought that was incredible!!!! How many companies would do that??

This is exactly what the computer does, and all i can give you..because i have no other information.

The computer came without a hard drive (they wanted to keep that). Bought a used hard drive that was formatted right before i bought it. Took it to a buddies, and installed windows 7 onto it. Hook it up via sata cable to the motherboard, and have the power wire installed on the back of the hard drive as well. The computer boots up, goes to a blue "HP" screen (That's all it says, no options or any other words). Then it gives me that error. There is no user input, minus what i have said previously. I think im just going to call this pc a loss, and pick up another one.

It might depend on how the HD was originally formatted. Don't give up yet, I'll show this to my IT guy at work tomorrow - he's pretty dang good with this kind of stuff.

What i would is place a working computer next the non working computer then just google ntldr. That way you can read whats on the net and work on your computer. I've used this meathod many times.

what are the system specs of it? may have a bad stick of ram. usually DEL key will get u into bios setup so you can set the boot device order wich is usually floppy>CD-ROM>harddrive, some hps use esc or f11 to pull up the boot menu, mabey try windows XP if you have it, not much difference from xp to 7 to justify an upgrade imo. usually when you see a blue screen of death, its not worth the effort to try and decode it, its either corupt hard drive and should just be reformatted, or failing hardware such as a worn out power supply or bad ram.

Are you saying you installed windows on the hard drive and then installed the hard drive in the computer. Is your copy of windows on a CD or a DVD and is it a boot leg copy. You should be able to boot with the CD-ROM in a DVD drive but not the other way around and like was said set the boot priority to CD-ROM first HDD second boot with the CD delete all partitions then turn off the computer, Boot with the CD again and then windows will take over from there all you will need to do is enter the product code when prompted. I am guessing the HDD was not partitioned correct not allowing windows to boot proper.

didnt u know, that guys a professional IT guy, just like his other threads where he didnt need our advice, hes smarter then we are lol

ur the same guy that came on here asking opinions and when ur ranger turned out to be more work then u thought u werent running ur mouth last time.

its a simple problem, but rather then be constructive i am choosing to be a dick, just toss it out, ur better off buying a new computer with a warranty so u wont ever have to open it.
