ive got someone to cosign on a loan for me so now i can buy my first truck that costs more than 500 bucks. i was thinking of getting an 86 ranger in pa but it seems a bit odd to me. rebuilt 302 motor, tranny, brand new paint job, f150 axles for 2k? well anyways i thought i would get something closer to home. probably going to be getting an 04 ranger super cab 2wd 3.0 5 speed. i sat in it and realized that anyone over 6' should never have to suffer the standard cab rangers. its got 72000 miles on it and is absolutely beautiful. its at a dealer that pretty much only sells ford rangers. so off tomorrow to test drive it, talk it over a bit with the woman who has convinced me to buy a truck in the first place, then off to the bank i go. its not 4x4 like i wanted but its just one of those things where you see it and you know it was meant to be. so my 95 will be my daily driver/ toy and this will be my nice vehicle that ill hardly ever drive.

if you've got a cosigner just go buy a 2010 4.0 4x4 ;)

buy what you want in the first place or you wont be happy, if you want a 4x4 get that. trust me

Almost all vehicles become worth less, not more, as soon as you buy them and for as long as you have them. It only makes sense to borrow money when you are doing something with it that will make more return than the interest so it is profitable. - OR - For extreme emergencies where you have no choice. If you have to have a cosigner, that is just another measure of what a bad idea this is. Borrowing money to do this will negatively affect the rest of your life. Keep driving the '95 and save up your money so you will be in a strong position when a genuine opportunity comes your way.

It hurts but it's so true.

But on the other hand if your '95 needs a bunch of stuff it might be better to move on. I could have a new engine and transmission put in my '85 for $2500 apeice... somebody pulls out in front of me and insurance would have a hard time giving me $2000 for the truck... so that is not a real good investment either.

I had to have a cosigner when I got my '02, I had no credit history either... but even once I got it paid off I got a truck that have absolute faith in it to drive wherever I want. Having a reliable set of wheels is a very valuable asset in keeping your job too, the "my truck broke" line only works so many times. I would consider that a pretty good return on investment really, it is a tool that helps you make money. A money pit that leaves you the side of the road with a big bill at the parts store is not a great tool for such things.

But I don't know what your '95 is like either, it might be in great shape which would make this entire post null and void.

I like legends view of things and its how I do it but if your a young guy starting out you need to establish yourself as responsible. To be a reliable employee you must have reliable transportation. To be responsible with money you must have a record of being responsible.A good rule of thumb to use is make the payment your talking about into a savings account for a while 6 months or so really know if its worth it to you and if you have trouble doing that you have no business getting a car loan.

If I was you and wanted 4x4 get 4x4 it will be a lot more satisfying to make that payment if its what you want.If you feel like that is your truck do not let the salesman know that, always be willing to walk away there are a lot of trucks.

He said his 95 would be his DD so my bet would be that it's plenty reliable. My 95 certainly is.

if i get a newer 4x4 im just going to trash it and destroy the value of it even quicker. my 95 is in good shape running wise but its not pretty. i plan on using the 04 for longer rides/when i want something you dont need penicillin to get into. if i get a 4x4 it will probably be a 1st gen semi rustbucket or something. payments arent an issue since i make more than enough money. i saved up about 2k within the past 2 months towards this truck. i test drove the truck and absolutely love it. i figure as soon as i get this one paid off i should be able to buy a 4x4 without a cosigner and then my lil old 95 doesnt stand a chance if its still alive by then. i got an insurance quote on the 04 yesterday. would be 340 a month by itself and the ranger is 93 a month. when my ranger insurance renews in june my total payment will be 250 a month for both. so within a few months my 95 will actually pay for itself in the savings.
