New tools you've bought recently?

I have some 4 gauge wire to crimp terminals on to in my relatively immediate future.
Yeah... I bought a cheaper version a year or so ago. I also have one you clamp in a vise... but it doesn't play well "on-vehicle".

Im just not sure i would ever use an expensive one enough to justify the cost. You're younger and pulling wrenches for a living these day... so I get it.

Can you do both almonds and walnuts with that thing?

HF 3/8 Torque Wrench
HF 7 amp Wheel Grinder with Diamond Blades.

That is a bad ass crimper...
Different brand but same design that I bought 35 years ago for my electrucal contracting business. It's not fancy. But it served me well.

I bought an Ammco 4100 brake lathe last Friday. I found it on a FB Marketplace ad. Some guy was selling a whole trailer load of stuff that he got from an estate auction (I think in Montana) and was hauling it home to Alabama... and selling off pieces as he went... super cool guy but man his trailer looked like the beverly hillbillies.

He was asking $1500, I talked him down to $600 (about what I've seen several others sell for at auction lately) and then after looking at it I found that he broke off a piece that guides the arbor back & forth... I think I can weld it or it's replaceable, worst case... an unfortunate mistake when he loaded it with a skid steer. So I ended up buying it for $250. Maybe scrap/parts value. It did come with a LOT of cones, adapters, etc. I dropped it when we brought it in the shop and broke one of the mounting feet off. Bummer deal but I think I can fix that too...just frustrating.

Aside from the broken stuff it appears to be working. I'm sure I can make my money back if it ends up being a dud but I've kinda wanted one for a while to turn brake drums and rotors and maybe flywheels. Now I have to find a place to put the stupid thing. I had no idea how heavy these are!

From the same guy I also got this nylon fuel line repair kit for $20 so I THINK that maybe makes up for the broken parts at bit!!

I’ve been wanting a brake lathe for a while too.

Also don’t have space for one.

The used ones around here seem to go for $1500 to $3500 depending if they have all the accessories or not, and how clean it is.

Still a good deal
Compared to a new one, but not an impulse buy.

It just needs 110v power so in theory I could put it in the back of my garden shed but getting it in there might be a real challenge. I hate to dedicate space in the shop to something like this but already I am almost at the point of kicking one truck outside so that I can convert 1/4 of the shop to a machinery bay. I really need just a bit more land to drop a couple shipping containers on, then I can fill them with crap like this that I rarely use and it'll be out of the way.

It came with a big tote full of accessories. I think it actually has some cones and stuff from an Ammco 5000 but there's an adapter to make them work on my machine. I feel like the place that this stuff came from just threw things in boxes without knowing what went where... I also got a partial set of radiator tester adapters and what I think are tailgate latch rods.

Hadda make some planter boxes and my old Craftsman went buh-bye

A Father's Day gift from my kids. They got it off Amazon, it took two weeks for delivery. Very decent quality. They said they paid under $150 w tax. Has some weight to it.

Bought these today from HF. A16 qt oil container for changing your oil. Best $20 I spent. It's very durable too, not flimsy, and a 30" breaker bar from HF. $11.

New tools and containers for me, but they were fabricated in the shed of miracles from cunningly preserved special items.

Like most of you, I have thousands and thousands of nuts and bolts and screws and whatever in all kinds of containers. When I’m looking for something in particular, I have to dump them out into an old 11x17 aluminum tray, pick out what I want, and then dump them back in the container. When I dump them back in, a few of them always miss the target and I have to dig for them.

So I took a regular ole laundry detergent jug/dispenser, the bigger one that has a handle, about the size of a gallon of milk, and I split it down the middle but preserving the handle, and then I cut the neck off by the cap to eliminate any ridge as the items pour out.

Those are 1/4-20 bolts up to 4 inches long, and they slid out without one missing the target, and I poured them three times as fast as I’ve ever done before. The beauty of the soap jug is it’s a more flexible, more heavy duty, vinyl plastic, a lot heavier than like a milk jug, so it should be durable.

The next item was to make some storage containers for bigger and heavier nuts, and bolts and such. I remember when I was a kid, my uncle would take glass jars with screw-off lids, and he would screw the lids to the underside of a shelf, fill the jars with whatever, and then he could screw the jar into the cap to leave his workbench clear, but still have them at his fingertips. It’s that kind of idea, but more modern.

I like all kinds of pickles. The Klausen spears are one of my favorites. They come in a heavy duty plastic jar, probably around a quart or a little more, that’s squared off on all sides. They’re very easy to stack.

I took the lid, pulled out the liner, and drilled two holes in it. Then I took a little piece of scrap Aluminum about half the size of a pack of cigarettes, and drilled matching holes. Then I used an 8 inch zip tie and ran it through the lid and the aluminum under the lid, but left it loose where I can still get my fingers under it on top.

Lincoln was supervising.

A few years ago I picked up a box of 2,500 1/4 20 self tapping pan head bolts, which are fabulous for all the projects I do, for a whopping $25. I’ve used a couple hundred of them, so 2,300 left, and I’ve been tripping over the box at the base of my workbench ever since.

It might be a silly thing, but that jar is pretty heavy, and the little handle makes it a breeze to move around with one hand. I filled up three of the pickle jars, and half filled a peanut jar that was very similar. I tucked away the three, maximizing space because I could stack them, zip tie just flattened out, and I put the half full peanut jar handy since I end up using them one or two at a time in day-to-day projects.

And before the chorus chimes in, I know, I know, Harbor Freight sells a tray for six or seven bucks that does the same thing, and they sell little storage bins for two or three dollars each. I’m just not in a position to throw around that kind of cash for something that’s not an emergency.

Patents Pending…
