Hello all my name is Ira, i currently own a 2006 Mustang GT, but i mainly use it for Road Racing. Well since where i live the closest road course is about 5 hours away i decided i am going to jump on the bandwagon and start drag racing (there is a track 40min from my house). I am now in the market for a 1998-2001 Ranger 2wd. So my question is will a newer Boss 302 crate engine work in these trucks, or would a 5.0 out of a Fox mustang be a better choice. My plans are to either stick with the Boss block and forged internals and go with a Paxton supercharger or take the 5.0 and bore it out to a 306. So far my ideas for the truck are a full blown street/strip truck to run in the 10's. I would really like to stick to EFI since tuneing and clearence is better than a carb set up but i know a carb setup would mean less work in all the wiring and getting the computer. Please help.

well you did come to the right place. it will take some time for the guys with the wisdom you are seeking to post up. the fox engine fits, I have even seen a 32 valve 4.6L in a 98 so i don't see why the boss wouldn't work but I don't know anything about it.

welcome.

:icon_confused:Hell why limit yourself to a small block? Go with a blown 514.:D

Any 5.0 will fit with no problem, the Boss would be great for increased power levels. The one bad thing about the newer Rangers is finding headers that fit. Torque Monsters are good but only have 1 1/2" tubes, good only for about 380 hp and cost over $750. You will probably need to fabricate some custom headers to get around everything. Here is a shot of some 1 3/4" custom headers going on a 351 in a late model.

The headers might be a problem, but other than that i am planning on running a good boss 302 block or if push comes to shove i have an extra 4.6L 3v that i have ready to be built for my mustang i just never got it done. I am planning on no more than 800-900hp since i still want this truck to be able to drive to the track, throw on some slicks, then race and be able to drive home when i am done. Or i could could run a Boss crate engine and use the Edelbrock EFI kit. Anyone know where i can find a cowl hood for a 99-01 or would i have to get a custom one

800-900 HP? You are kidding I hope!

well my mechanic has already made 3 306s running twin turbos that have almost pegged his dyno which is rated at 1500hp but i am hoping to go supercharger at around 15psi. I already have alot of heavy duty parts, this is a project where i really want to go all out, but more than likely the truck will be more realisticly around 600-700

Well got word of a 99 Ranger in need of a new home so i might go pick it up, its a single cab styleside XL, so i might buy it depending on the price. Plus got a call form my mechanic and unless i dump some huge money on the GT500 motor he has sitting in the shop the most power i will get out of the truck to the wheels is around 500 or less but even with that i should be in the 11s
