I am new to the site...and I have a question.

I have a 1986 Ford Bronco 2 XLT with the Automatic 4x4, with only 45,000 miles. I am having trouble with the engine mainly with the RPMs. I can't get it past 2500 while driving. I think it might be a fuel issue. I am a young guy and could use some outside wisdom. Any help would be appreciated.

I think there is a rpm limit when in park. I'm not sure if there is a limit in neutral. Have you tried while driving or in neutral?
 
Well, it could be fuel. Its fairly easy to replace the fuel filter. Also you can rent or buy a fuel pressure gauge meant for EFI. Those years should see ~40psi. Under 30 and there is a problem. Invest in a manual, preferably the ones ford put out. Try eBay...
 
One other thing...
Does it have a CEL? That year didn't have a dash light for the CEL, so you have to actually do a check for one. Look at the TRS tech pages, its in there somewhere how to check.

Two tone paint schemes were pretty common on the Bronco II, I have parts off a blue and silver I scrapped years ago and my 88 is blue and tan (Eddie Bauer scheme). Also owned an 89 Eddie Bauer in blue and gold.

Not to burst your bubble, but unless you are the original owner or personally know the original owner or have a collection of records, it most likely has a lot more than 45k miles. These trucks did come with a 100k spot on the odometer so there’s no way to track how many times it’s rolled over otherwise.

The car was owned by my great aunt for only a few years before she passed away...she bought it from a guy who only towed it behind a camper. So when I got the car it had been sitting for over 21 years. Also I forgot to mention when I got it going the odometer said 41k miles. More than that I have no clue of the history of this vehicle.

That makes for a pretty fair chance it is accurate then. I just figured I’d throw out a warning because I’ve been seeing a lot of these appear listed as “low mileage” and knowing that 18 years ago I owned an 89 with somewhere between 250-300k.

If it sat for that long, highly likely to have had bad gas at some point clogging the fuel filter. If you haven't changed it you should.

That said, I've had a dead spot at that RPM under load with 2 different 4.0s now. I really need to pull the ECU and look at the capacitors. And do a resistance test on the temperature sensor.

Yeah, I’m about ready to do some troubleshooting and fire off a bit of the parts cannon at my 89 B2. It’s running pretty good for a change, but I have a bit of a hard start and fuel economy made a brief excursion to proper and then promptly fell off again. So that’s going to have to get chased down and remedied. Gonna be putting up a post on that soon. Thankfully the B2 and Ranger share the same engine stuff and to some degree the Explorers so a lot of these issues have a large knowledge base to draw on.

Fuel can definitely be an issue. I didn’t realize that apparently the fuel pump in my Choptop was getting weak. I only replaced it because the tank was leaking and the old pump and lock ring were so crusty that I didn’t feel like fighting it. Of course, then the new pump exposed pinhole leaks in the lines and I ended up replacing nearly all of the fuel system. Didn’t really make much difference to fuel economy but it started acting like it had a lot more available power.

My computer was definitely bad, all three capacitors had a stain ring under them and a couple were puffed. Also a couple resistors were blown up. Replacing that and an the O2 sensor got me even more power, like I had to re-learn how to drive it more power, and better fuel economy for a tank and a half, then it went to more power but crap mileage so here we are. It’s closing on being a 40 year old rig that I never fully overhauled at any point so I’m gonna say it’s part of the territory.

this can be injectors or cats or both as well. there is alot going on there in tune state and change
