Hey everybody, so I found a ‘96 Ranger V6 4.0 for $1500 with 204K miles on it on FB Marketplace. The guy says it runs and drives, has new starter, new water pump and new power steering line. The 4x4 doesn’t work and he thinks it’s could be the actuator motor but he’s not a mechanic. The interior is a little beat up but nothing a good detail can’t fix.

Any tips and advice would be much much appreciated!

Welcome to the site!

That looks like an honest price to me. 👍

that’s what my brother says as well, the only issue I’m seeing is the 4x4 not working. Could that be transmission? I’m a novice when it comes to cars/trucks so I want to learn how to fix em and make em last

I'm not too good at the 4wd mechanics.

I'm sure someone will post some ideas for you.

Did you say that the interior is a little beat up but nothing a good detail can’t fix ? ...lol .... I hate to be negative but its the worse interior I've ever seen. The door panel is busted up, the steering column clam shell cover is missing and why was it even removed ? The seat is torn in numerous places and stained all over and the carpet is trashed. That's all I can see in the pics. This interior has been completely neglected and abused. Other than the mechanical defects that you know about, how many more hidden issues may there be ? This truck was not taken care of. This truck is going to be nothing but a headache and a money pit.... Save up a little more money and find one that you can at least enjoy driving home.

Holy shit!! I noticed the door panel but didn’t notice the cover behind the steering wheel. Thanks for the heads up. I may already know the answer to this question but, do you think I should check it out in person? Or at least talk to the guy tomorrow and ask about the door panel and the steering column cover? For the record this is just going to be a work truck/daily driver.

I would just forget about this one. I know you say its "JUST" going to be a daily driver but you won't be driving it daily or even weekly if it keeps breaking down on you. In my opinion, it just looks like a big headache and a bunch of hidden problems that may get you stranded somewhere and end up causing you to sink a lot of money into it. The defective 4x4 system is enough to make me run away from it. Not to mention that it already has over 200,000 miles on it... Find one that at least "looks" like it was taken care of and not abused and neglected and start from there.

the rust belt is anywhere salt is applied to roads in the winter.
Chicago and Milwaukee are in the western end of the rust belt.

care to explain what the rust belt is? Lol come on man I told you I don’t know shit about cars. Do me a solid here 🙏🏽
Areas of the country that get snow and use salt on the roads.

It'll be worse in person if you go see it. I can tell the rockers are bad, It'll prolly have a smell too.

I recently bought another truck. My budget was no more than 4gs
It had to have less than 170k miles. And it couldn't be a rusty pile. It took awhile to find one but I did paid 3600$ and drove it home.

Save more money and keep an eye out. You'll be glad you did.
