Hello all,

I am new here and am in the midst of replacing my tired 2001 Ford Focus with a potential 2004 Ford Ranger 2WD Edge Series. They want $7500 for it at our local ford dealer as its a lease return with what they call high mileage. apparently 38,000 is a lot according to them. I still need to go in and test drive it which will be done tomorrow. Things I am wondering that the dealer can't answer and well I can't answer unless they let me mess with the truck is the following

What is the rear end ratio on a stock 2004 Ranger 2wd edge
Where they equipped with a limited slip rear end

Only reason I ask is because I live in northern Ontario in Canada and we can get some nasty weather. Now I figure if I could drive a 2.5" lowered focus around in the winter and not get stuck then this truck should be cake to rock in the winter. It would be even easier if the rear end was limited slip.

Well any help that I can get on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You can look on the VIN sticker, there's an axle code to see which rear and if it is limited slip. There's a chart or info in the tech library or I can look it up for you. If it has 16 in tires it is likely a 4:10 and more commonly an open diff. Limted was an option and kinda rare on a 2wd.

VIN:1FTYR10U24PA29661

I ran that through the decoder I found in the tech area however it failed to tell me what I wanted to know. Main reason why I want limited slip was for winter driving. Snow sucks but I don't really want to go 4X4 just to get around town in the winter. Guess I could always toss a few hundred pounds in the box and would be ok.

It's not the VIN that has the info you need but the vehicle certificate label. It's located on the drivers door jamb. Couple of hundred pounds always helps but nice to have the L/S.

Look on the door jamb for the axle code. Then go into the tech library and scroll down to axles and it will tell you which gears you have and whether it's limited slip or not.
