New to site: '07 2.3l, AT, electrical issue

New to the site, '07 2.3L, AT plain jane Ranger.
Sat in my truck, prior to starting I heard the "clicking" sound of the 4 way flasher (as if I left it on). Looked at the dash, no flashing arrows, got out to look at the front and rear signals (nothing amiss). Still the "clicking" of the relay. Moved the turn signal lever down, got out saw the left turn signal operating (both front and rear), moved the lever up, again looked and found the right signals (front and back) working as designed. Remember, the keys are in my pocket, no accidental start or power from the ignition. Returning the signal arm to the neutral position, the turn signal went off, however, I could still hear the "clicking". I've never experienced this before so I'm at a loss. Any thoughts or suggestions?

PS: I pulled the 4 way flasher fuse, and everything ceased. No flashing, no sounds, etc. Upon replacing the fuse, the "clicking" returned.

Sounds like something with constant (key off) power is shorting out/leaking voltage over to the flasher circuit.

As a follow up: I replaced the "flasher relay" with a new one, the "clicking" stopped for about 5 minutes, then began again. I then pulled the relay (under the dash, left side) and left the vehicle overnight. This morning I went to start the vehicle (with the flasher relay out) and the battery did not have enough juice to start the truck. I got it started and drove it a short distance, no issue other than the "Clicking" both while running and with the ignition off. Still don't know what's going on. Thanks.

Can anyone suggest where to find (manuals, etc.) which fuses are "Hot" (ignition "Off") and which fuses are off when the ignition is off. I'm having a possible "ground" fault issue, and am trying to track it down. I have the fuse schematic but can't decipher which are "off" and which are always on. Thanks.

You could try ebay for a wiring manual. Helm sells new manuals but I don’t know how far they go back. So ebay may be your best bet.

The flasher circuit is hot at all times... the control signal for hazards comes from the multi function switch. I don't have schematics... but does 07 have the HEC (??) In the RH kick panel?

I've heard of some weird symptoms when things happen there.

2007 and 2008 will have the same wiring, pay attention to the "except 2.3"(1 and 2) indicators, the V6 Rangers and 4cyl Rangers have slightly different wiring

I would unhook battery, then remove the Clam shell covers from steering column and unplug the Multi-function switch(turn signal stalk) wiring harness, then hook up battery and see if the clicking has stopped
Multi-function switches are "the only moving part" in the system so can fail


Yes, the dual flasher unit has two circuits inside one has 12v full time for the 4-ways, and other has key on 12v for turn
It was a good idea to replace that flasher unit first, but I would now check the Multi-function switch

2006 Ranger and 2007 will have the same turn signal wiring, engine model didn't matter

I meant to type BEC. I added question marks because I wasn't sure of Ford's naming.

BEC would stand for Bussed Electrical Center. Basically a fuse relay center in the RH kick panel area. Seems I remember water intrusion issues.

HEC would be Hybrid Electronic Cluster.

SJB(smart junction box) is in/behind the passenger side kick panel, cab fuse box is part of the SJB
It replaced the GEM module(behind radio) as the body computer in 2004 to 2011 Rangers

But 4-way and turn only get their fuse power from SJB its not involved with actual operation of 4-ways or turn signals

The battery drain could certainly be an issue with SJB but wouldn't think that could cause Flasher unit to "click"
