Hello,
New to this forum, but I recently acquired an 87 Ranger 4x4 with 2.9, I am not new to the 2.9 but my experience lies with small and big blocks. Mycurrent issue is I recently replaced cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, put in a 94 explorer radiator for extra cooling, thermostat, but the engine runs pretty good for a while, I'll drive it for a few minutes but then it acts like its starve for fuel and when you press on the gas pedal it wants to die and if you let off its ok but then wants to stumble and then die. I will wait and it starts right up but the same will happen. I am thinking TFI, and TPS. I even thought of a plugged cat. any thoughts?? Input would be appreciated

It doesn't say where you are so I don't know how warm it is.I had a very similar problem and come to find out the tank pump was out and the high pressure pump was trying to pump all the fuel causing a vacuum and gas vapor locking. So see if you have the two pump system and make sure they both work.My 86 has 2 fuel filters and if yours does check them both.

the 87 should have 2 pumps.. i'd check the fuel pressure. its easy on a 2.9 w/ a pressure gauge.

welcome!

Try testing Fuel Pump PSI and also the condition of the Oxy Sensor. My truck didn't die when it was bad but it would bog down and just about kill itself under load.

If it dies and you find that you have no spark, it would be the TFI. Especially if you do after it cools for a bit.

My high pressure pump works, my low pressure pump works, but I had changed my fuel filter earlier and had seen a ton of rust, so I had chaged the filter, but still had the problem, I then pulled the tank and found a ton of rust, the pick up sock was full and the tank had started to rust through, so now I ordered new fuel tank, straps, new fuel pump and I will again order a new filter but just in case I will change the O2 sensor, Thanks for the input and Ill keep you posted

We have sucess

I wound up replacing my midship fuel tank (rusted out and with bad gas), I then check out the cannister assembly, cleaned it out and then replaced my fuel pressure regulator and now it runs like a clock, plenty of power now onward to those valve cover gaskets and my "new" daily driver is good to go:D
