NEW To 4x4

ok ill start by saying ive never owned a 4x4 vehicle before
I bought a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 last friday and was wondering
whats the differance between 4-high and 4-low?
ALSO
Do I need to be at a stop to change from 2wd to 4-high or 4-low?

Any Info is welcome and thanks in advance

4HI is just like 2HI except power is sent to both the front and rear axles via the transfer case... In 4LO mode power is still sent to both front and rear axles via the transfer case, but a reduction in gearing is used (ie. you'll be going slower in 4LO)... Neither mode should be used on hard pavement as there is no differentiation between the front and rear axles in 4WD mode... 2HI to 4HI can be done at speed, 4HI top 4LO you MUST be at a standstill...

I'll let someone else explain 4-low, but it changes your gearing, for crawling and stuff. Low speed stuff. you can shift into 4-high from 2wd on the fly. To shift into 4-low, you must be stopped, in neutral, with your foot on the brake.
