new tires for 14's

im due for a new set of tires and i was wondering what are the best tires for my ranger, i have a 93 with 14's, lol, i want some tires that are kind off road but not buckshots, and i would like to be at around 30' whole tire, i was eventually thinking of going to a junkyard and getting some explorer 16s but thats along time from now. and this is my first car. so what does 225/70r14 mean?

i think the biggest tire you can fit on a 14 inch rim is a 28 inch. really there isnt much of a tire selection for a 14 inch rim. im in the same boat as you right now and am just going to get some 15'' rims.

not many offroad tires for 14 inch rims. I think super swamper makes a set , and I also think BFG makes some in the AT treads. But not sure if you can find anything in 30 inches....but i could be wrong.

Interco makes a 225/85r14 (29x8.5) TSL Radial, 28x8.5x14 TSL Bias ply and a 27x9.5x14 SSR Radial. I think General makes an AT2 Grabber in 225/75r14 or something like that. Firestone makes a 14" Destination AT and I'm prettry sure there's a Bridgestone Dueler of some kind in a 14" size.

You have some options there, but not as many as you would if you were to get some junkyard 15" Explorer/Ranger rims.

so what does 225/70r14 mean?

225 = Tire Width
70 = Tire profile, how thin/thick the tire is
14 = Rim size
R = Radials

Not anymore. Checked up on that recently as my tires are going to need replaced by next summer (I run winter tires so I have 2 sets). The Dueler is no more. Which is sad because I liked my duelers.

I'm going to find some 15's for a decent price. There's nothing for the 14's anymore unless it's a compact car tire.

Explorer rims would bolt right on. 16" is a common size on late model Explorers. '02-up Explorers use a different offset however so look for rims off a '91 to '01 Explorer.
What matters is the tire diameter, not rim diameter. 16x7 Explorer rims with 225/60-16 or 235/60-16 tires would work well.

Cooper has an ATR tire in the 225/70R14. Overall diameter is 26.45". It is recommended for a rim 6.5" across, but will fit a rim between 6-7" across. AND...its an outlined white letter tire. (Part number 05564) Check it out here...

I just bought and installed a set of 15" rims/tires off an older Explorer for the same reason. The 14" tires are becoming awful hard to come by. The rims fit great, but the tires are a little too large (235/75r15) causing some slight rubbing occasionally. Really need to step down to 215/65/r15s to get back to the original tire diameter (much cheaper than a lift kit).

Rule of thumb is to go down one aspect for every increase in rim diameter unless other adjustments are made. For example, the original 215/75r14s had a 25.9" diameter. The 215/65r15s have a 26" diameter.

I bought a 93 Ranger 5 Spd with a 2.3 with 215/75/r14s and have been tryin to find some offroad tires to fit it. No luck obviously, but that lil 2.3 will light those little tires up
