I've just finished ( or not ) installing a new timing belt in my '97 2.3 as per Haynes, Started right up, and then died, re-start and it wants to die again, acts like out of gas ( not ) and then settles down and runs smoothly, till I try to let out the clutch, and again acts like starved for fuel, have to bring rpms up before starting out, once moving, behaves normally. Any idea what I've missed doing or did'nt do? I have a new pvc valve, if I can find where it goes?
This is a 1997 Ranger XL, 2 w drive, AC

I would check to make sure the pulleys are lined up exactly, IMO replacing the timing belt on these trucks are a huge pita

Yep, its right on the marks. It sounds like its not getting enough air, like I'm flooding it while I let the clutch out? Any idea?

My 92 was doing the same thing and when I eyeballed my timing, it looked right so i just lived with it. Timing belt broke so I replaced it and made dang sure timing was perfect and the truck now runs like the dickens compared to before. I can definetly feel all 89 ponnies pushin me now.

O2 sensors

Just got back from town, where I had the codes pulled. Says I have bad O2 sensors, both pre-cat and after cat, Had to order the after, it will be here tomorrow, then Maybe my '97 will purr again.

Hopefully. those will cause it to...well not want to run. Was it acting up before you started working on it?

No, it was not acting up, the timing belt broke, got the truck home, installed a new belt and that brings us up to where this post started. I read in the Hynes book that to clear codes, I can disconnect the negitive side of the battery, but I will lose stored operating parameters from the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) so the engine will run rough for a while ( several miles ) while the computer re-learns the info. And that is where I'm at today,, disconnected the neg batt side, re-connected, started her up, idle is too low and she wants to die, rev her up a bit and she runs steady, drove down to town and back, thats just under 8 miles, seems to purring nicely, but that was a warm engine last evening, no tellin what I'll find when I start her up this morning, best go find out ?

Still the same, starts and dies, till warm, then idles. Also there is a slight hesitation when accelerating, kinda coughs and then accelerates
