New starter problem

On the 97 2.3 I just bought, I discovered it needed a starter after hearing tooth grinding on cold morning startup. I bit the bullet and bought a new (not rebuilt)Remy starter. Put it on this morning, pretty easy compared to older Ford starters. (The old one had broken its washer and was about to explode.) And just my luck, after three starts the new starter's solenoid locks up and won't stop cranking. I had to stall it in gear to stop the starter.

Is there any other common problem with the starting circuits on these things, besides just getting a bad new starter? Ignition switches? Ground problem? It has to be electrical, since the starter kept cranking even with the key off.

OK from what I'm reading about these PMGR starters, when the gear assembly/shift mechanism is engaged fully another positive electrical connection (bypassing the signal circuit coming from the ignition switch) is established in the starter which flows current to the armature. So if the starter bendix assembly siezed up and didn't return by spring force, that would keep current flowing through the armature? Right?

Bring it back to the store and get a replacement. They would not have a guarantee if they never failed right out of the box.:icon_cheers:
