I want to buy some better after market speakers but I don't want to but a new head unit. I know that it wont sound a whole lot better but would this be worth the trouble. also does anyone know how many RMS watts the factory head unit has? I have a head unit I took out of a 2000 limited explorer with cassette and cd.

actually running some new aftermarket speakers to your stock headunit will make a noticeable difference. there will be alot less distortion.

They’ll sound clearer and just better, the Kenwood’s are nice, but if you can go to an audio shop in town to hear them before you buy.

Ya thats a good idea. Does anyone know how many watts the stock head unit is?

i would say 5-10 watts. aftermarket units put out 15-20 watts rms, but the power is cleaner.

the pioneer 3-ways are awesome, paired with an aftermarket headunit the sound and volume is a night and day difference

What he said except I have 4-ways. I love mine, but I plan on upgrading to Premiers soon.

I have a 2000 ford ranger and wanted to upgrade the system, i found a set of kickers KS680's they have an RMS rating of 6-60 watts, could a stock head unit run these well or would i risk blowing them?

Unless you have a special factory instally stereo with above average power, as is available for a number fo car/SUV's/etc, the rule of thumb usually goes:

Stock HU + Stock Speakers = Suck
Aftermarket HU + Stock Speakers = Waste of Time w/ Possibility of blowing the stockers
Stock HU + Aftermarket Speakers = Much Improved
Aftermarket HU + Aftermarket Speakers = Optimum

Stock headunits put out the power needed to power the weaker stock speakers, a stock headunit will power aftermarket speakers perfectly fine, they just won't be powering them to their RMS, which is the optimal power level.

So i do not risk ruining them if i wont be running them on an aftermarket HU?
