new speakers off of stock stereo

I was looking into getting new 6 1/2" speakers for my truck (1990 ranger 2.3 reg cab). I would like to eventually get a 4 way system set up with some 6x9's and a pair of 8" subs, but for the time being, some newer door speakers is all a college budget can afford.

What I would like to know is how many watts does the stock stereo system for my Ranger throw out? I would hope newer speakers will be just as loud (hopefully just a little more) with better quality sound.

I did this same thing for awhile before I got my hu. You'll notice an improvement in sound but once you get a hu you'll notice a Big impprovement. You're ranger probably puts out around 12-16 watts rms.

Did you guys upgrade the stock wiring?

I can get a new headunit cheap if I need. How many more watts could i expect?

I was looking at some compound speakers that come with a set of tweeters too. I could run this off of stock wiring as well? does the tweeter connect to the wiring for the door speakers as well?

all headunits work with out an external amp. rms= Root Mean Square it is what your head unit puts out at a constant rate or what your speakers operate at constant rate so your headunit is constantly putting out 17watts rms. so you can use that headunit with basically what ever component speakers you want its not going to hurt em. my headunit puts out 22watts rms x4 channels 50watts max and it is paired with speakers that run at 80 watts rms. they are "under powered" but they are just fine it wont hurt em. but they can be run with an external amp if i wanted it too it would only make them louder

and also dont buy that headunit you will regret it. sure it looks cool but it will fail quick iv had one similar too it if your going to spend the money to buy a headunit do not buy dual products i would suggest a pioneer headunit or a kenwood. dont buy sony either. and when looking at speakers and amps and headunits the only wattage that matters is rms because you wont be running max watts for long periods of time or at all for that matter.

look at this headunit.. i would recommend it along with http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_16495_Pioneer+DEH-1100MP.html

these are good component speakers..http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11871_Orion+Cobalt+CO652.html

and these are the 6x8's that i have in my truck and i love them i highly recommend them

4 channel means i can run 4 speakers off of that headunit?
So i can mount some new 6 1/2's in the door, and those 6x8's behind the seats?
And the tweeters that come with the 6 1/2" run on the same channel as the speakers?

I can get everything you listed for just around 200$, which is pretty reasonable.

and also, if i wanted to run a single sub rather than those 6x8's, would the headunit make enough power to make it sound good? or would i need a sub amp?

You'll need an amp if you ever plan on running a sub. They take a lot of power to hit note low, loud, and clearly. The mini amp on the hu will not give you near enough power.

As for the stock wiring, I still have mine and it sounds fine but it sure won't hurt to upgrade.

the tweeters will splice into the woofer wires there is a wiring harness with it. and any sub will need an amp the headunit will not power a sub.

I think I might go all out and buy a full system. A 3 way amp will use 2 channels to power the speakers and 1 for the sub, right?

Should i just get a single amp for the sub and run the speakers off of the HU or would it be better to buy a 3 channel amp and run everything off of it?

with the sub amp, will the speakers be overpowered?

If you can afford it, buy two amps. a 2 or four channel for the speakers and one for your sub. If you can't, then buy a single sub amp and save up for a separate amp for your speakers later.

it also seems cheaper to buy a 2 channel amp for the speakers and a sub amp seperately....would that be a better way to go?
