i have a 1987 ranger 4x4. its a 2.9/5 speed. i put a new slave cyl in it and the clutch still doesnt disengage (when you start it in gear it moves the truck).

i keep trying to bleed it but i may not be doing it right. i just do it like you do brakes, pump it up, hold it down and open the slave cyl bleeder. it doesnt seem like there is any air coming out at all but if i watch the master cyl while my brother pumps the pedal i sometimes see a few bubbles in it (its clear plastic). it hasnt gotten any better so i know i have to be doing something wrong or the new slave cyl is no good.

im pretty much on my own with this truck and ive never done anything clutch related. im learning as i go so im hoping someone can help me out. i do not have a manual or anything and no one wants to give me a hand with it.

there should be a little window or plug on the bottom of your bellhousing (not the thin metal shield window between the engine and the transmission) so that you can look in there and see if stuff is moving when someone else pushes the clutch pedal.

thanks, i went out and looked, and besides the shield you take off, the only window or anything is on the passenger side on the bottom and all i can see thru that is a little bit of the flywheel. the tranny in my truck is the mitsubishi FM-145 if that helps, maybe there is something i missed.

could there be a problem with the clutch itself? i dont know how old it is but there wasnt any problems with it before. my father thinks its something with the clutch because there is no air coming out of the slave cyl when i open the bleeder, its pure fluid.

could be a bad master. Really sounds like a hydraulic issue.

did you replace the pressure plate while you were in there to? did you at least check the fingers of the springs while it was apart to ensure no damage? that could cause it to. i'm having your problem now, and this weekend i'm going in and replacing everything.

no i didnt do any of that and i was just searching around and found out that it could be the pressure plate. the only reason that didnt get done at the same time is because the clutch was working before this

Im not sure about the 145. mine was a fm146 and had an oval shaped plug on the driver side bottom that I could pull out and see what was going on in there.

88 is the year they switched to the 146 right? that must have been one of the 'improvements' they made. im starting think maybe the clutch might have rusted to the flywheel because the truck sat for a while. i just assumed it was the slave cyl because my explorer did the same thing when it sat for a while and thats what the problem was.

yeah, its worth a shot. mine rusted to the flywheel and really had me pulling my hair out. I didnt even know it was possible. I had the flywheel out and exposed all winter so I guess I was asking for it.

it worked fine before the truck sat then the clutch wouldnt disengage, i just figured it was the slave cyl because the same thing happened to my explorer when i let it sit a few months, the slave cyl was no good.
