I have a 2004 ford ranger and was getting some vibration when stopping. First i changed the pads and still had the vibration. drove for about 3 week hoping that maby it would stop with no luck. talked to the guy at the parts store and he said i need new rotors. after new rotors were installed yesterday the vibration was gone but i can smell that they are hot and maby a little smoke. will this stop in time?

ok, first of all..

you were getting vibration when stopping because you warped your rotors. somewhere along the line they got too hot and became slightly disfigured due to the heat and the pressure from the pads being pressed in.

secondly..

its happening again, or at least it will sometime shortly IF they really are still getting hot like you said.

Calipers are sticking/seizing, slide pins are sticking/seizing, or your rubber brake flex hoses are collapsing not allowing the fluid to return to the master cylinder.

You've got some investigating to do to figure out which is causing the brakes to drag.

did you put new pads on and if you did what brand

I think Nitrofan is closer to the mark...

And since I am the official TRS prophet of Doom & Gloom
if I say there probably isn't a disaster going on...

IF the new rotors were simply tossed on without removing
the anti-corrosion oil that they are coverd with when shipped
to keep them from rusting in the boxes... then the smell from
that oil burning off

He only said they SMELL hot, not that they are "hot" and "Hot"
in regards to brakes is a relative thing...

Sticking caliper pins would be "unusual" on an '04.

Sticking caliper pins that would cause the brakes to DRAG on
a 1995-up would be highly unusual.

I really have to disagree with that Allan. I see it all the time. Usually resulting in having to use torches and an air chisel to get the slide pin out of the caliper bracket. Then sandblasting and cleaning the slide pin hole out with emery cloth in a drill. New slide pins and boots and fresh caliper grease to top it off.

I've had a stuck pin myself, and I've repaired others,
but the USUAL symptom is that the brake
pedal is nice and firm but you get poor brake performance because the
pin prevents the brakes from being applied....

When you install new rotors, you have to wash the "anti-rust" coating off. Use brake parts cleaner and a paper towel.

As for the smell, I'd probably guess that it is the "new" coating on the brake pads wearing off. When they are used for the first time they give off a burning smell. This will go away after a few miles.

If you are worried about a caliper being seized up, take off the brake caliper and make sure the slider pins aren't seized. If you didn't do so when you replaced the pads, grease the pins with anti-seize and re-install them.

'95 up caliper pins should be liberally smeared not with never seeze but with a good synthetic base MARINE grade grease.

I use either "Green Grease" or quaker State's identical green marine wheel bearing grease.

either of these will NOT "wash out" from road spray.

I had a tube of the stuff that my brother borrowed to grease the
wheel bearings on his F250.

Somewhere in the process the tube got stepped on and squashed.

That tube of grease sat out in the yard on that lump of plywood from
mid fall to spring and through a winter completely exposed to the elements...

Other than the leaves that got stuck to it there was no visible change
from ~5months of explsure.

My only concern with the marine grease is how it performs below minus 20 C. the tube I bought only rates it as usable TO minus 20C. It gets lots colder here then minus 20C.

Its dropping to minus 27C tonight. I havn't used the tube for anything yet =>
