ok i need some opinions here...

i have an 88 ranger: supercab, 2.9, w/180,000, Fm146, dana 28 adn 7.5 both L/S, threeinch body lift, and coil spacers and blocks; 32 super swampers.

i called about an 84 ( which turned out to be a 94) ranger, six inch lift, two inch body lift, 35"boggers, 2.9 w/ 160,oooFM146, D28, 7.5, 4.56's, rear is locked, regular cab, blue. its way cooler than my truck...:derisive:

i called on it for 900 bucks.. i called and considered a trade... he said, appropriately, he wants to look at it. we looked and exchanged thougts for about an hour... the ONLY thing is that it has a cracked transfer case rear housing (ARE THESE REMOVABLE WITHOUT TAKING OUT THE TRANSFER CASE, OR IS IT RUINED??) sounds sketchy and i met up with him...and he just noticed it, and offered to throw in 200bucks cash for the tcase. it sounds sketchy to me... but this would be the first time that i ever bought a car myself... any opinions??

If that "94" looks like your 88, it's an 83-88. If it looks like your 88, but has a different front end - 89-92. Unless it was swapped in, the 2.9L was never an option in 94, or 84 for that matter.

If it is a 2.9L (will say directly on the top of the engine), check the oil cap and dipstick tube for snot. Make sure the water level is normal, etc. If it looks like it has a carb, it's probably a 2.8L.

As far as the cracked T-case, I am not entirely sure.

Pete

Edit:
I just thought of something, it's probably a 94' with a 3.0L. The 3.0Ls from around then were generally solid motors. I would be suspicious if he knew that the T-case was cracked, yet doesn't know what engine is even in it... Just my opinion though.

thanks. it is defenitely a 2.9. it says right on it. he also said it has a later model drivetrain in it. its an 89 through92 for sure. he is an old fatter guy who needs something smaller to get into. he is also on disability. so he doesn't want it, so my guess is that he never had the energy (or the caring or the knowledge) to get under it and check it out. its a 2.9, and ill check the snotty oil filler cap. coolant is green, just didnt think to check the cap... thanks, ill do that in the daylight next time lol. ill reply back
