Hey everyone. So i have recently purchased an 89 ranger 2wd w/4 in lift. It also has an 8.8 rear end that was swapped from a explorer, not sure what year. And now im wanting to put a front axle and transfer case to give it 4wd capabilities. Only problem is i dont know very much about this truck and what can be swapped. so i would appreciate some guidance on where to start. any and all help will be awesome

I tell ya what - that's probably the same axle I grabbed for my Ranger Highway Blaster - you should look around the "PUMPKIN" on that axle for a small metal tag with numbers on it, and write everything on it down.

Take a picture if you can and post it up

You can do that by uploading it to an album here. Make an album and check it out....

THAT TAG tells everything you need to know about the axle, including not only gear ratio but whether or not it's a limited slip LOCKER!
(That's an advantage on explo's - I WANT an explo chassis to put a Ranger cab and bed on... But I'm real weird)

They have both a 373 and 410 LS axle

Whatever axle you put in front MUST MATCH RATIOS, and you'll be stuck with the same tire sizes front to rear.

You really don't want to know how many busted transfer cases I have seen for stupid mistakes like that one;
Just plain mis-matched front and rear axles....

I mean DANG!!!

And someone in a four by four shop out around Norfolk Virginia once told me:
"You ain't a real offroader until you busted an axle deep in the mud. You build extra heavy forever after..."
