I just bought my third ranger, a 2003 supercab 4x4 with an automatic. Great truck and a big improvement over my 2wd 4cyl. The truck uses what ford calls securilock or coded keys. I have found out that you have to have two coded keys to make new spares. Of course I only have one of these so I am told by my local dealership the truck will have to be recoded and I will be given new keys. The problem being it costs a lot of money to have this done and in my opinion coded keys do not belong on any ranger period. The reason I have owned only rangers is due to their rugged simplicity. I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced a simmilar problem and if there might be a way to disable the securilock anittheft system so that I can just have some regualr old spares made up.

Yep!

Call some of the local locksmiths.. I think there is a way to make a key if there is only one key.. PLUS they are a lot cheaper.
As a side note I have a non-securitylock key made and tied under my bumper in case someone locks the real key inside the truck. Using it will make the alarm go off when the door is opened but when the real key is used to start the vehicle the alarm shuts up.. BTW the non securitylock key will turn in the lock but the engine will NOT start.
If there were a way to get around the damn lock feature it would be easy to steal our rides.. So I doubt there is a way.

I was in the same boat as you, I ordered the coded key blanks from E-bay, 2 for $25 then took them to a locksmith who cut them for $2 each, first though they cut a non coded key as a test blank & I have it just like Big Jim did for a spare door key. I called around to several dealers & found one who would just program the keys, They did 2 keys for me for $35, it took them less than 10 minutes, & now if I loose one I can still program my own spares. I know its not cheap like a normal key, but I believe the original dealer I called quoted $150 for 1 key. This way was much cheaper.

Thanks for the advice, My dealer wanted 140 but i will likely be having the keys cut elsewhere and then programmed.

your manual actually tells you how to code your keys.

Your right but, Only if you have 2 already programmed Keys, otherwise they have to be programmed by the dealer or locksmith etc.
