I just got a great deal in a 1989 Ranger. This is my 2nd Ranger and I don't know much about it. So I need some help! I'm pretty sure it has the 4.0, and I don't think the 89s came with a 4.0? It does have MAF... It's a 4x4 5speed, and I'm trying to find out what motor, trans, transfer case, gear, limited slip? ect. and problems I need to look out for. It already needs a new clutch.
I can post pictures if needed. Thanks!

Post pix if you want the most responses. An 89 is probably a 2.9 or 3.0 V6...the tag on the sill of the driver's door should tell the tale and a lot more...post that info, too.

Here's a picture of the engine. My problem is I don't know what has been changed on the truck.

Well, that's indeed a 4.0. Unless the 4.0 has an evil twin I've never heard of. LOL

Get pictures of the rest of that and it can be identified pretty quickly.

Yep, must be a 4.0 cause it don't look like the 2.9 or 3.0...take it away 4.0 guys.

So the 4.0 must have been swapped into it? How can I tell what else was swapped along with it? I'm wanting to know the trans, axles, what it's geared ect.. What would I need to look at or take pictures of?

Start with the mfg. tag on the driver's door sill.

Post a pic of the underside of the trans, one of the rear diff cover, and then count the number of bolts holding the 3rd member of the front diff to the beam. Your options are 10 or 12. 10 is good, that's a D-35. 12 is less good, that's only a 28.

The only sure way to know what gears it has is to jack up a wheel and start counting rotations.

Also, a good close-up picture of the emissions cert label on the radiator core support would be nice. An 89 build date doesn't mean it's actually an 89. Late 89CY build date could be an early 90MY, meaning the 4.0 could be factory.

The title says it's a 89 and the door says it was built in 88....
I counted the front diff cover bolts and there is 10, so I'm assuming it's a Dana 35. Here's a few bad pictures of the trans and rear end.

Looking at trans from rear.

bump. I need to know trans ASAP because I have to order a clutch!

Well, there is no pan on the transmission so it's not FM. Looks kinda rounded to be an M5 tho. Either way the 4.0 should use the same clutch unless something really weird has been done.

m5od r1 the toyo and fm both have pans on them
