I have a 2002 ranger 2wd automatic trans. 3.0 motor.Had this truck 2 years. Tranny All ways shifted 1st to 2 a little sloppy. Last week sent to repair shop to replace water pump. They couldn't get clutch fan off in truck so pulled rad out to remove as complete unit. That said I picked up truck and now have engine light on.code says low voltage tps . Also now bangs when shifting from 1st to 2nd or down shifting from 2nd to first. No flashing I'd light. What could they have done at repair shop to cause these two new problems? They weren't there before the repair and of course shop tells me not there fault. Where do i.start looking? Any.help would be appreciated. Sorry for long question.

Welcome to TRS :)

Did you check connector on TPS(throttle position sensor)?

Remove it and look inside, make sure it is clean and dry

TPS is a main sensor so if it is not working computer will put trans into Safe or Limp mode which causes harsh shifting.

What was the exact code number?
The code the computer uses is important of course, but the codes it does NOT USE are important as well, it has a number of TPS codes it can use, I think around 20 of them, knowing the exact code it used really helps

Testing TPS info here: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2009/throttle_position_sensor.htm

I don't have the code number. When I went to pick up truck and saw check engine light I went back inside to let them know. Owner came out with scanner and said code was low voltage to tps sensor. He pulled plug checked pins looked clean and dry. Cleared code. I left 10 mins later code came back. No drivability issues idles fine not sluggish on accelerating. But trips low voltage code.

Extremely bad repair shop. Got home found pvc line disconnected hold down for heater hoses lying on top of motor broken heater hose at plastic tee tranny cooling lines not back in holder and the plastic baffles for rad lying down at bottom of support. Tech is a back yard hack and shouldn't be working at a shop. This adventure cost me a lot.of money yo leave with more problems then I went in with. Never go back there.

So he just told you it was TPS code, this shop you don't trust now?

Check main engine wire harness connector

Get code from autoparts store they read it for free, WRITE IT DOWN

You can buy OBD2 Bluetooth reader for $15-$35 that works with smartphone app, free or $5

Works on ANY vehicle sold in North American from 1996 and up, so not a Ford thing, ANY vehicle, it was require to by Law to work.

He didn't give me code number just told me code was low voltage at tps. I'll stop by parts store tomorrow and get an actual code number.

Took my truck in for an alignment once and the wife's truck in to get the codes scanned once. I buy disposable vehicles now and if I cannot fix them, they go bye-bye.

No loan payments, no depreciation...just mo money in my pocket. Haven't had a break down or been stranded in 40 years. I do, however have my tires mounted and balanced one time when purchased and do all change-overs myself.

Junking my truck is not an option. Glad you can afford to just throw them away I can't.

I junk a vehicle when it becomes junk. I save money by doing my own maintenance, if possible. I don't trust other people or Shops to work on my vehicles for the same reasons you state...came back with more and different problems than what you originally took it in for. Not "rich" just frugal.

Sorry, Douginfl. Wasn't trying to offend. You took your rig in for a specific repair and it was returned with more and different problems. I was trying to be subtle in insinuating that "Shops Suck" and that you should do your own maintenance if at all possible.

I know there are good, honest Shops around but you didn't happen to find one and there are none around me either.
