bought a 83 ranger 4x4 2.8 v6 i am familiar with the rangers since i have had three of them in the past, well the truck i just got ran good until the other day stated jurking like it was running out of gas, poped the hood and realised the smog has been tooken out, the hole vac tree is blocked off as well as a couple of vac lines on the carb, the timing was completly off, got it timed now and it runs like shit there is a choke on this carb that is adjustable dont know where it is suposed to be set to did the best i could seems to idle now but i still think the vac lines are all screwed up, where the timing was set before the seemed to have descent power but at 10 bdtc the truck just does not have good power, do i need a book? or what the hell do i need to do to make this engine run good? all help and info would be greatly apreciated, oh and former ranger station member back on this sight again long time no c every one good to be back.

i will pull the carb off tomorrow, fuel filter is fine clean gas i did look into the duraspark conversion i will be doing this just dont have the money right now. will get back to you on the carb rebuild thanks.

oh and what is the fuel and air mixture settings, if tightened how many turnes out? and they are the two screws in front under the fuel tub right? thank for the help.

Turn them out 3-3 1/2 turns. The reason it runs like ass is the dizzy is not advancing. there is nothing you can do to get it to work without all the smog crap working correct. It will cost around $150 to do the conversion and it will run alot better but you will need to address the carb separate. You can run that carb the way it is with a metering block or get a different non feedback carb. If you can find a late 70s pinto, mustang II or capri with the 2.8 for parts or you will need to piece it together.

okay so 3 turns out on the left and 3-1/2 turns out on the right correct? and yeah i want to get a non feed back carb to run on the 2.8 what rig and year can i get one from? hear are some other things i have been noticing tinkering with the carb its got that stupid electric throtle pos sensor and with the carb set at 1-1/2 tirns out on both the engine run realy high when started for like 5 minutes then idles down and dies either the engine runs high and runs decent or it doesnt idle runs low and is gutless without no job right now i cant depend on this truck to go look for work 18 miles away. going to do more research on duraspark conv..

did some more tinkering on the carb on the 2.8 decided to take the idle moter off becouse it was doing nothing but making the engine idle really high for about 5 minutes before it would idle down to curb idle then i got this idea to unplug the computer on the passenger side near your feet and adjusted the air fuel mix to 3 out on both and my truck runs so much better now what the hell lol with the computer unpluged can it mess anything up? please respond i need to know..

Without all the smog stuff it won't run properly - so go DuraSpark or just "limp" until you have the parts.
That computer controlled throttle 'motor' sets the idle according to what the computer senses. Just disconnect the wires and back it off and it can run ok.
The distributor won't advance unless the computer is functioning properly.
As I see it, you need a manual or two and get the smog back (might be expensive) or DuraSpark it. I need smog here in Kalifornia, but if I lived elsewhere, I'd go DuraSpark = start with junk yards and e-bay.

Good luck

what exactly does that mean the dizzy wont advance? and with the computer unplugged will the alt still charge the batt? not very electrical smart.

The battery will charge - that system is not controlled by the computer.
The distributor is electronically controlled. It determine the advance by reading the sensors and signals. (It also leans the carb - which is why you should put on a different carb or do the air admittance modification found here in the tech section.)
There is no vacuum advance.
Maybe you should check this site to see how to pull codes - your problem may not be all that bad. (but keep looking for Dura Spark parts.)

hey thanks for reply, can any thing get hurt running it thits way its just weird how it runs so well except for a little crapin out on really high rpm when i get on it this truck has never sinc i bought it been able to burn out on pavement and now it will i mean a big diff.

Is the choke full open when the engine is warm if the choke butterfly is not full open it will run in a rich condition especially at high speeds.

okay going to duraspark my 84 2.8 ranger what do i need to look for at the junk yard, make, year and parts for junk yard find. all help would be greatly apreceiated.

mustang II, capri, and pintos that came with the 2.8 have the parts needed including the carb.
