"New" normal highway speed

I wonder what ever became of @Will's bus conversion? That thing was incredible.

You go right ahead and believe that (y)

Believe what... something I’ve seen a few times a month for the past 8 years? Yeah I will.
Even if I wasn’t on the scene, I’m the one who types out the work order state what vehicles we picked up, for what reason, and a location. I literally handle ever single one. If you give me enough evidence, eventually I’ll believe water is wet.

I don’t blindly follow newer is better... but I’m not afraid of everything new like you are. I work on new stuff. I know both new and old stuff. I grew up with a mixture of both. I still own both. I still work on both. I have to diagnose every electrical problem on all of our new vehicles BEFORE we send them back for warranty... because if it turns out to be something caused by us, we can’t pay the dealer if they don’t have the repair bid.
Like a scared little child, you run and hide behind anything 70’s whenever anyone mentions something new. I will admit that newer vehicles are way safer and still drive my ‘79 without a care in the world.

that was my favorite driving time. I'd be in the right lane of the turnpike doing 80-85 with cars flying past me. it was incredible while it lasted

now that i'm in PA people drive like 65 in the left lane and there's not a day that goes by that I don't want to just run someone out of the left lane

I just liked the lack of people on the roads. It seems ever since the virus hit, people have upped their game of being jerks and inconsiderate of others.

That's one thing I like here in Texas is the 75 MPH speed limit on rural roads.

On 130 it was 85.....Out past Austin...

I thought the max speed was 80.

For most vehicles, anything over 60 mph starts to hit the fuel consumption average. Obviously many aren’t concerned about that all that much any more. I try to stick with the posted speed limit unless it’s obvious I’m putting myself and my passengers in danger because the flow of traffic is moving so much faster. I also stay out of the left lane unless I need to pass somebody. That way the speed demons only have to fight among themselves in who gets to get there first.

its 80 out on i10 west of junction. i just drove it this weekend on the wife and i's 1100 mile drive this weekend to lubbock and back.

The Florida Turnpike is a free for all. You can do 85 mph and still get passed. Otherwise it's 70 MPH unless otherwise Posted. I see a lot of "minimum speed 40 mph" signs as well.

Oh wow I didn't realize what was going on in this thread before my first comment.

Christ on the cross. Rusty, man, as a collision technician whos been in the industry for 20 years now, all I have to tell you is, you don't know what you don't know. Cars are so much more sophisticated than you think they are, with multiple layers of varying strengths of steel.
Old cars don't have shit for structure. They were only 1-2 layers of mild steel, which was thicker because it needed to be, because it was weak. Hell the inner B-pillar (the middle layer of 3 layers of steel) on a 2011+ Ford Focus/Edge/Taurus/Explorer is Boron, you can't dent it with a hammer, which is why we have to replace them if they get damage in an accident.
Cars have changed more in the last 10 years than they did in the previous 20. They're built to protect the occupants, and are far from weak.

Here’s some more real world experience to ignore.

Thanks for this.

I'll second that.

Ignoring real world experience posted by a moderator should be a ban-able offense.

Nah... contrary to our beliefs, we’re not always right. And I’m always up for a good disagreement of opinions, but sometimes people disagree with facts because of their opinion.

is your name mr fancy socks?

Show me a actual accident between a 70s fullsize and a modern whatever. Its not tested...its basically theory cause its never been tested and recorded.

People survived plenty of wrecks in the 70s too

it is tested and recorded. it is just private. the testing is put into a database. it compares actuals to the models. and is used to sharpen model prediction.

it is tainted...because they are compromised vehicles with rust rot ect...that reduce from age... this was done extensively on the last two testing rerates.
