Hello I just signed up.
I have a 97 ranger 2.3 5spd
I’m interested in some performance upgrades. Looking forward to digging in.

Upgrading the 2.3L has come up many times. I'm sure you could spend hours digging up information here on the site.

I would just try to keep your performance expectations inline with the volume of spare cash you have in your checking account... most horsepower mods get a bit pricey.

We like pictures... lets see what you're working with.

I was wondering if it’s possible to advance the cam timing by using a degree cam gear? Would this be possible being this engine uses a cam position sensor?

Maybe with a custom tune... at least to realize the full benefit of doing it.

Searching the forums and internet will be a good friend while you head down this road.

There are several that know the 2.3L pretty well. I would suggest starting your own post after you do some searching... I'm sure others will join in and share.

Ok I’ll do that. Thank you for your input

Also... know exactly what you want before just doing modifications.

Typically advancing the camshaft will bring the power down the RPM scale.... and vice versa for retarding the cam.

Yes. I’m looking for more low end torque as this truck has little. I do mostly city and rural non interstate driving. I have an 8.8 4:10 posi rear I’m swapping in soon to help me out on the hills in my area.

The gear change will be a good mod.

Just making sure you had a handle on cam timing... many don't.

Rock on...

You'd probably benefit more from just revving the motor further between shifts than you would messing with cam timing and such. It IS a 4 cyl after all.... they want/NEED to be revved. It's a part of their design really... you won't hurt it by stretching its legs a little further.

Welcome to the site.
