Really glad to find this resource.. My 15 year old son has just been given an 85 Ranger and we want to get it looking good and running strong before next fall when he will be ready to start driving it.

2.8L 4x4 Automatic.. light blue, lots of surface rust but amazingly solid with no holes or bubbles.

I've ordered the Ford shop manual, the Haynes book, and the owners manual.

I am a bolt on backyard mechanic but might try to tackle this thing from the ground up and see how we do.

My son hasn't really turned a wrench on much more than his bike so I am hoping we can do some real quality learning together.

I'd like to pull the motor.. never done that.. and go through it top to bottom.

I also want to do the sanding and primer work then have a shop do the final shoot.

Welcome to TRS - Those books pale in comparison to the Tech Library here at TRS and the practical knowledge of our members - but they are good paperweights - LOL.

Sounds like a fun project and your son will get to know his truck better than most teens will ever know their vehicles - good luck with your project.

Welcome to the Station. It's sad that most kids don't know they're way around a toolbox, and this should be good for both of you. Check out PBBlaster, I think they have somne great stuff to remove rust.

Welcome, I'm from Akron and go to school in Toledo, where abouts are you at? I did the same thing got my truck when I was 15 and had already done mods before I was 16. Wish me and my dad would get a project.
