I can't really argue with your thinking. It depends on a person's situation as to whether the Maverick or a Tacoma or the New Ranger is a better fit. Paid for is a huge trump card though and I know the truck payment on the new Ranger is putting a real squeeze on me. I'm looking forward to when it is paid off. At least, it's serving the "mission" I bought it for.

With the Maverick it's basically a matter of 1) do you need a full back seat and 2) is the bed big enough for your needs?
For me it's 1) not any more and 2) no.
A base 2wd Maverick hybrid is the lowest-cost vehicle Ford sells in North America.
I had two Sport Tracs previously that have a short bed also but both had bed extenders which you can get on the Maverick (and Rangers), they are immensely useful.
I parked next to one this week and gave it a good look over. The bed is about 1/3 smaller than my Sport Trac's, which for me just isn't enough. A 4-door Ranger is about the same size as my old Sport Trac.

I love my Ranger and it has a 5MT which we will never see again.

Maverick? Lol

If the Maverick had been offered back in 2019 when I replaced the Honda CR-V with the FX4, I might have considered it. The Maverick has more power and the bed size would be an increase in cargo capacity compared to the the CR-V. So it might have been an contender.

No regrets in the direction I went. For my over all needs, the FX4 is a better fit but the Maverick would have been an upgrade from the vehicle it would have replaced.

The option game is a weird way to compare vehicles.

They guy that wants the lux crap on one generally won't be happy with the stripper model of the next class bigger truck. He wants the fancy wheels, quiet tires, leather seats, fancy radio and headlights.

Painted aluminum wheels, cheap tires, cloth seats, measly 3.5" screen and halogens need not apply.

Let alone a 10+ year old compact truck.

Yeah, I see some people complaining about the cost of new Rangers but it all depends what you get and dealers load most of them up. Mine stickered for a bit under $31k, not significantly more than the 2008 Sport Trac I traded on it. I'm perfectly happy with it. Didn't need or want the extra electronic gizmos that come with the XLT. I need 4wd, A/C, cruise, nice wheels, and a hitch and anything else is gravy. Downside to the Maverick is you can't get decent wheels with the XL.

I ordered the XL and putting the same wheels I have on my Ranger on it. That’s if I decide to keep. My teenage daughter is gunning for my Ranger and I’ll probably cave🤣

I like the maverick. I would take one because the bed sides are so low. I drove the ranger when it came out though and really liked it, too. Until the maverick came out, a new ranger was foing to be my next truck. Now, probably a maverick because i have been fine with a 98 2.2l sonoma single stepside and this 04 3.0l ranger single cab stepside.

I like the lower truck and wish i could lower this ranger but its an edge so cant go to low with the torsion bars.

My 98 sonoma had the factory zq8 package so it was lowered an inch from the factory, had camaro rims from the ractory, and had huge sway bars front and rear. It was a go cart that got almost 30mpg and i really enjoyed it.

That is what the maverick would be to me. Super gas mileage and autocross suspension so it would be a blast to drive.
