new mass air truck runs much worse..

as the title says with my new mass air it runs awful, even died a few times (new fomoco mass air number 2 incase the first one was bad) it was doing this with the old mass air as well. then i think it quit because it ran a whole lot better, now i just have it unplugged and it runs how it used to with the bad mass air.. so whats my problem? could i have grabbed the wrong eec? is there a guide to what they are supossed to be? like the numbers on the eec iv case? i assume i got the right one because it runs and i believe its the only one with coil packs.. so please help me out im on my wits end lol
 
If you have a bad MAF, you will get poor performance, as the computer doesn't know how much air is being fed to the engine, and thus doesn't know how much fuel to flow.
The maf is very simple, most have two wires that are heated, and the air flowing by will cool the wires a specific amount depending on ambient temp and HOW MUCH AIR is flowing by. That's all they do. If there is 'stuff' on the wire(s), the cooling will be 'off'. If the wire(s) are broken, they'll not have a good resistance value. What was wrong with the old one? Why did you swap? What were the previous symptoms? Did you unplug the battery and let the computer forget anything it had learned after replacing the MAF? Are the wires in good condition? Do you have other intake leaks? A bad PCV valve or hose?

the symptoms were about the same as they are now just not as extreme. there is nothing on the wires, as its brand new. the pvc valve is good and i cant find any vacuum leaks anywhere, i did not un do the battery but i will go and do that now, although it effected nothing with the old mass air.
 
no power at full throttle, poor startups if it sat and idled too long it would try to sputter and die but never did die untill i replaced it.
 
What year did the ranger start using 8 plug motors? And what year did the mass air start
 
my eec is from a 1993 model I believe
 
Maybe your MAF doesn't like being so close to the throttle body. Do you have the stock air intake you can try ? I have a K&N air intake on my 97 2.3L and it's been fine. The MAF mounts near the stock location.
 
I wish I did, maybe I'll buy a pipe to move it away a little

I think that is the 'tech sticky', but if not, there is a sticky that has all you want and more.

The placement of the MAF, distance from the throttle body, should make little difference as IT USED TO WORK OK where it was, right?
I would check fuel pressure and delivery volume. Description seems to point to a dearth of fuel.

It may have, but I bought the truck basically how it is now, but it wasn't running at all then, needed a new computer, a new starter, a new icm, passengers side coil pack, timing belt, clutch, shifter bushings, clutch master cylinder,lots of wiring fixed, ect ect. So I'll throw a 2 foot ricer elbow and see if that does anything
 
Put some intake pipe on it runs slightly better but not good still. Still randomly dies
 
thought so too, traded it in twice for ford motorcraft only, no difference between the three. could the throttle position sensor be my problem, somehow? even though it only runs good with no mass air plugged in..
 
Did you disconnect the battery to force the ecu to relearn the fuel trim?

Also, some cars will run acceptably with the MAF disconnected because the ecu detects the loss of signal and reverts to lookup tables to calculate airflow. I don't know if your truck works this way or not.
